Everyone deals with the suicide of a friend differently. We grew up together, and one day, he was gone, leaving no letter, no explanation, nothing behind. This film was an exploration of the acceptance of a best friend's death through an imagined letter left behind.
This project was developed in 2 Parts. Part 1 involved creating a “soundpiece” that you might include in a film. No images, just sounds. Part 2 involved taking another student’s soundpiece and use it as the inspiration for a film of your own. When I first listened to “Sounds from the Train”, Thomas Adshead’s audio piece, images of a daredevil, jumping onto trains, and then off again into crowds leapt into my mind. I had a striking image; one that I couldn’t un-imagine. Soon, I began the long process of creating a short animated film, based around a man catching a free ride on (the roof of a train) transporting him to his girlfriend. For this project, I created a film designed to emulate the look and feel of 1920s Art Deco. “Free Ride” was ‘selectively’ coloured; most of what is in frame is shaded in greyscale, while important, or interesting details are coloured-in, like the girlfriend’s dress, or the protagonist’s borrowed red rose. The camera wanders off, observing several of the train’s inhabitants, including forlorn men, conductors and even a cat. I tried to pay attention to detail, attempting to craft a miniature world in the locomotive. My goal was to make each extra character as interesting as the protagonist; everyone is on the train to go somewhere; and I imagined that all of the train’s passengers’ destinations were as exciting as the protagonist’s. I’ve always thought that this mindset makes the most engaging stories. “Free Ride” is my small ode to Art Deco style and the old black and white films I grew up watching with my family, many from the twenties, thirties, and forties.
